Dr. Canner attended Brown University and graduated with a Sc.B. in Biology in 1973. After receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from Brown University in 1977, he went on to receive his Internship of Orthopedic Residency training at The Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1981. With the field of Sports Medicine in its infancy, his training in Sports Medicine was with Dr. Joseph Torg and Dr. John Gregg at The University of Pennsylvania. He has practiced in Reading, Pennsylvania since 1981, opening Berkshire Orthopedics LLC in 1985. With his colleague Robert Engle, PT, ATC, Dr. Canner established the first Sports Medicine Center in our region. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a fellow of the AAOS. Dr. Canner became the first active member in Berks County of AOSSM, the team physician organization of The Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr Canner has been on Active Staff at Reading Hospital(Tower Health) since 1981. He recently was appointed to Board of Managers.
He has lectured in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine at both the national level and locally. His list of publications includes articles on the knee and shoulder and sports medicine. He has been the orthopedic consultant at Kutztown University, Ursinus College, Wilson High School, and multiple amateur and professional teams over the past 38 years. Finally, he has been the orthopedic consultant to the Berks County Chapter of the Easter Seals Society for over 20 years.
